ESJF is one of the signatories of the Joint Statement Calling for Resolution of the Issue of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery from the Women of North and South Korea, and those Standing in Solidarity to Commemorate the Centenary of the March 1st Movement. This joint statement, which demands justice and promotes peace, represents the unwavering efforts of women leaders in South and North Korea developing gender equality, empowerment, and peaceful unification since 1991. In May 1991, in Tokyo, women leaders from South Korea and North Korea met for the first time at the Peace in Asia and Women’s Role Conference. The conference had three additional meetings in Seoul and Pyongyang until 1993. What the women in the Korean peninsula began laid the foundation for future inter-Korean summit meetings and exchanges promoting peaceful unification in the Korean Peninsula. The joint statement marks the first time that women from North and South Korea, along with overseas organizations, joined together to voice their demands for peace and justice through an ad in one of the major U.S. newspapers. This historic joint statement is published in the March 1st edition of the Washington Post. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Korea's provisional government.
